PREVENTABLE Study is a research project aimed at understanding if taking a drug called atorvastatin helps prevent health problems in people 75 years or older. Atorvastatin is a type of medicine called a statin that helps lower cholesterol levels. This study involves around 20,000 older adults who don't have cardiovascular disease (heart disease) or dementia (a disease that affects memory and thinking skills). Participants will be randomly assigned to take either atorvastatin or a placebo (a harmless pill that has no active medicine) daily for up to five years.
The study aims to see if atorvastatin can reduce the chances of death, dementia, or disability, and also check for any mild memory problems or heart-related issues. Participants will have their health monitored through phone calls and possibly in-person visits if needed.
- Participants will receive the study drug by mail every 90 days.
- The study may last up to 5 years with regular follow-ups.
- Participants should be 75 years or older and without certain health conditions.
