This study is about patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) who have been on a machine to help them breathe called mechanical ventilation for at least 48 hours. The study looks at how well their diaphragm (a muscle that helps with breathing) works when they are trying to breathe on their own again. A special test called an ultrasound is used to see how the diaphragm moves and changes in size. The ultrasound also measures how fast the diaphragm can contract and relax using a method called tissue doppler imaging.

People who have been reintubated for non-respiratory reasons or have chronic respiratory failure cannot join the study.
